Strategi sederhana untuk bisa menanamkan Positioning produk maupun perusahaan Anda di benak konsumen adalah suatu tool sederhana yang dinamakan USP. Istilah USP sudah ada sejak lama dan merupakan singkatan dari Unique Selling Proposition.

Kebanyakan konsumen memandang bisnis kecil seperti hal yang sudah umum. Akuntan yang satu rasanya sama saja dengan akuntan yang lain. Pengacara yang satu rasanya sama saja dengan pengacara yang lain. Semakin banyak suatu produk atau service maka akan semakin umum rasanya. Masalahnya adalah kebanyakan marketer tidak melakukan apa pun untuk mengatasi persepsi tersebut. USP yang efektif harus bisa mengkomunikasikan kemampuan perusahaan Anda yang unik sehingga mampu memenuhi kebutuhan yang belum mampu dipenuhi oleh yang lain di pasar. USP menunjukkan kepada target market bahwa perusahaan Anda mampu dan mempunyai kualifikasi untuk mengurangi masalah dan meningkatkan keuntungan mereka. Sebuah USP bisa jadi adalah salah satu senjata marketing Anda yang terampuh.

Dalam menyusun USP perusahaan, Anda harus membuat daftar apa saja benefit yang bisa didapat pihak lain bila berbisnis dengan Anda. Jangan ada satu pun benefit yang terlewat.

Bila perlu, cantumkan pernyataan USP pada alat-alat tulis, kartu nama atau tools presentasi Anda.

Tujuan utamanya adalah supaya USP Anda dikenali dengan baik di pasar. Satu peringatan yang benar-benar harus Anda perhatikan adalah Anda harus benar-benar mampu men-deliver janji/benefit yang dikomunikasikan lewat USP. Bila sampai gagal, akibatnya bahkan bisa lebih fatal daripada tidak mempunyai strategi USP sama sekali.
